The Cape White Water season 2010 opens

The winter of 2010 in the Cape, arrived with a bang. Lots of rain and lots of running rivers for the first 2 weeks in May had the Cape kayakers scrambling to dust off their kayaks and get onto the water.

The first attempt on the Wit was written off, as the river was too high and totally out of control. The group moved the Moulinaars and had an eventful paddle down there. Returning to the Wit for the paddle the next morning, only to find it had already dropped to bumscrape level. More rain the following week however, ensured that all the adrenalin junkies were satisfied.

The Rivers of Southern Africa

 In what is a relatively arid region, it is somewhat surprising that the river industry is such a large and healthy industry. Perhaps the warm weather has something to do with this!

However, despite the large areas of desert found in the region, the rivers of Southern Africa are as varied as the people who live there. From the huge and raging waters of the Zambezi river, as it thunders through the Batoka Gorge below Victoria Falls, to the mellow and gentle Breede River meandering its way towards the sea, in the Southern Cape of South Africa. On these rivers commercial river operations, as well as recreational paddlers of all shape and sizes have developed and flourished since the late 1980’s.

It is important therefore, that some measure of control is introduced, in order to ensure that certain standards of safety, as well as quality are maintained. Hence the birth of the APA
